Production Parts wins mulit-year Super Hornet contract

Defence giant Boeing recently delivered the first batch of the Australian Governments new acquition of Super Hornet Fighters. The development came as Defence Materiel Minister, Greg Combet, announced that Production Parts had picked up a lucrative contract to supply rudder pedal kits for the program.

A recent article published in the Australian Financial Review has announced that this procurement is a win for the Rudd Government, revealing that lower production costs will enable Boeing to not only deliver the fighter earlier than expected but also under budget.

The purchase cost of the 24 Super Hornets is $3 billion, but with simulators, spare parts, training and a 10-year support contract, the cost comes in at under $5 billion, with the first five fighters delivered to Amberley Base in Queensland in March this year.

Production Parts has been awarded by the Department of Defence SADI (Skilling Australia's Defence Industry) Program, a new major agreement to up-skill current staff and secure future jobs within the defence industry.

This agreement, in collaboration with the Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Ltd (AMTIL) and Swinburne TAFE, aims to train 30 current employees and by 2010, an estimated 60 employees under the Diploma of Engineering course held in-house at the Production Parts' Airport West facility.

With the guidance of AMTIL and the flexible approach from Swinburne, we were able to develop a fully tailored and accredited course that has been designed specifically for our company. The Department of Defence and the SADI Program has supported this approach in the way we were able to develop an open dialogue with the training providers to create this valuable course for the defence manufacturing industry."
